Goal Setting

Goals represent the aspirations you have with the support of the NDIS and other services. These can encompass a variety of achievements, such as enhancing independence, securing employment, acquiring new skills, or fostering social connections. It is essential to craft goals with a focus on outcomes rather than the specific services required. For instance, instead of stating "To attend my day program," a more effective goal would be "To spend more time in my local community and develop skills for increased independence."

Every dollar allocated in an NDIS plan should align with a written goal. For instance, if seeking support for employment is a goal, it should be explicitly stated in the plan. To ensure comprehensiveness, short-term goals should be formulated in a way that covers all necessary aspects in just two goals. Goals must be broad enough to allow creative adjustments throughout the year and to accommodate various service types that contribute to goal attainment. An effective strategy for goal formulation is to reflect on what matters most to you. Consider aspects such as finding and maintaining a job, enhancing relationships, daily living independence, financial confidence, social and recreational activities, improved health and wellbeing, confidence in public transport or driving, acquiring new skills, housing preferences, or communication improvement.

Example of Goal Setting:

What's Important:

  • I enjoy attending the book group every week.

  • I value participating in activities at my local Community Hub.

  • I aim to enhance my communication skills.

Defined Goals:

  • To increase my ability to access the community for social activities.

  • To actively engage in the community and connect with others.

  • To improve my ability to communicate clearly.

Funded Supports Needed:

  • Assistance from a Speech Pathologist to enhance communication.

  • Attendance at the Community Hub and book group.

  • Support from a Disability Support Worker to facilitate transportation to the Community Hub and book group.

Understanding the linkage between your values, defined goals, and the necessary supports will guide you in crafting meaningful and achievable objectives for your NDIS plan. When setting goals for your NDIS plan, it's essential to strike a balance between short-term objectives achievable within the next 12 months and long-term aspirations extending beyond the plan's term. To align with NDIS terminology and maximise the effectiveness of your plan, consider incorporating the following:

Examples

Participation:

Engage in economic, educational, and social inclusion activities to enhance overall participation:

  • Example Goal: Attend vocational training courses to develop employable skills and actively participate in job-seeking programs.

Actively participate in community events to promote social inclusion and connection:

  • Example Goal: Regularly attend local community gatherings or volunteer opportunities to foster social connections and community engagement.

Choice and Control:

Develop a clear strategy to exercise choice and control over the supports and services I receive:

  • Example Goal: Create a personalised support plan that outlines my preferences, goals, and the specific services I want to receive.

Seek information and resources to make informed choices about my support providers:

  • Example Goal: Attend workshops or use online resources to educate myself about available support providers and make informed decisions based on my needs.

Goals and Aspirations:

Set clear goals and aspirations that align with my vision for a fulfilling and meaningful life:

  • Example Goal: Establish a career plan with milestones, including promotions or skill advancements, aligning with my long-term aspirations.

Regularly review and update goals to ensure they continue to reflect my evolving aspirations:

  • Example Goal: Schedule quarterly goal review sessions with my support team to adapt and update goals based on personal growth and changing circumstances.

Reasonable and Necessary:

Identify and access supports and services that are reasonable and necessary for achieving my goals:

  • Example Goal: Consult with healthcare professionals to identify and access therapies that are reasonable and necessary for managing and improving my mental health.

Collaborate with my support team to determine the most effective and efficient use of resources:

  • Example Goal: Regularly communicate with my support coordinator to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of current support services and make adjustments as needed.

Support Purpose:

Distinguish between Core, Capacity, and Capital supports based on their specific purposes and benefits:

  • Example Goal: Clearly understand the distinctions between Core, Capacity, and Capital supports to ensure that allocated funds are utilised appropriately for daily living, skill development, and capital investment.

Ensure that the allocated funds are utilised purposefully and effectively across different support categories:

  • Example Goal: Maintain a budgeting system that ensures funds are allocated appropriately across Core, Capacity, and Capital supports, maximising their impact on achieving my goals.
